Bart is a real pleasure to deal with and a genuine craftsman. the banjo came equipped with a Grover compensated that sounded just okay. I'm a big fan of these Prowler bridges made by Mike Smith. Just didn't deliver the way the Kateyz does. I have decided that the sound this bridge gives my banjo far outweighs the inability to mute the instrument. I have played fretted stringed instruments of all types, including banjos, for about 35 years. For players looking for THE bluegrass sound, this is it. At first I didn't like how the sound was very tinny, but a couple hours later when it had settled the sound was great. It was a pleasure to recently meet and work with Tim. Just when I thought the Huber couldn't be improved, the Davis bridge gave it just a slight increase of volume & an ever so slight longer sustain. My wife, sitting in the dining room on the other end of the house, thought I had moved into the livingroom, closer to her, because the banjo was louder and "punchier," as I had noticed on the Fender. I was amazed at the volume and clarity in this bridge, I would definately buy another one from him. I had a snuffy smith on before so it was no slouch, but now it is just amazing. But for right now I'll play some more in Gm. And as loud as you can play with it, it also works great when you need to "reign it in" and p[lay more delicately. The .656" on my style 3 made the banjo louder and dryer than another well known bridge that was very good. Get one of these if you need a new bridge. And I will add that I have cut down ie, ruined, many high end banjo bridges after 38 years of playing this dang thing. Very nice "no-sag" Red Maple 5/8"bridge with ebony top. This bridge is really loud and proved to be too loud for me because it introduced a ringing in my 2nd string and a rattling in my 5th string that I couldn't adjust out with head tension or a sock on the underside and 3 different sets of strings didn't eliminate these overtones. The bridges were finely crafted and have a wonderful balance of clarity, separation and decay. All the recordings I published on BHO were made with Bart's Mystery Wood installed. I've played with a Snuffy Smith Comp. Bart was again extremely helpful and I exchanged them for two that were the same as the first set but both higher. FWIW, Dave seems to be a nice fellow. Every note is perfect up and down the neck checkedby ear or by electronic tuner. The final choice was a combination of his "enigma" and "mystery" woods. I chose the new Select Maple bridge with 5/8 height and Crowe spacing from Tim Purcell. What if both were good singers? The bridge is compensated, and the top is flat to match my flat fretboard. They all worked well up the neck. The bridge is certainly worth the money that Greg is asking for it. The notes are strong, clear and distinct with a fast attack and a fast decay and have more timbre than any of the others. I highly recommend it. I was always impressed by her accurate pitch and remarkably pure tone. Probably my favorite bridge for Bluegrass music. I havent seen anything that resembles a downside to the bridge and really no reason to rate it at anything other than a 10.I will say that I live in Canada and I wanted to mention that the bridge cleared through our customs people without being opened and without attracting import duties and no attempt was made to collect sales tax on it, so Canadians who buy one can probably look forward to not having to pay any additional charges involved with importing one. I have a Bart Reiter 12" Round Peak banjo that I've always loved but felt was a little quiet, owing in part to the fact that I don't wear fake nails or picks. I recently tried Scorpion Bridges on my flathead 3 and flathead 12. He made no claim or guarantee that the bridge would open up the sound, make the strings magically more playable, improve the intonation, and so on. I wonder what the Spillway Dam Bridge would do to any of my clawhammer open back banjos? Never have I owned a bridge that gives so much tone and clarity, and I've owned quite a few. Don has great communication - responds quickly to queries - and builds a bridge to meet your needs at a reasonable price. After almost two days the difference became very apparent. This bridge meets those needs perfectly! This is the second bridge that I've purchased to try to upgrade my Gumby-era Goodtime. It is well crafted, and just looks awesome. Those overpowering high frequency overtones have undergone significant reduction, but not total reduction - which is great. Are you looking at Tim Purcell's height and Weight? It is a beautiful bridge and it solved the intonation problems and really brings out the sound of this open back. I set up my studio for rehearsal., giving both girls a mic and a set of headphones. The banjo has no more intonation issues up-neck. It has a few degree slant to it and the sound was fantastic. I tried the Sampson and was impressed with how it opened up the sound, the resonance and sustain sound is more in tune with the notes played and compliment the song. The gentle radius wouldn't matter, I hoped, and it didn't. Well it did!!!! The craftsmanship appears top-notch. I am pretty sure that part of his success in this design is that he creates a very slight radius on the feet to match the sag of the banjo head. I took the banjo and bridges to visit John Bowlin. This is the best bridge I have ever used, great for bluegrass and for snappy Irish playing. OK, it's a cheap banjo, and what can you expect. The note separation is also phenomenal. It also significantly improved my overall tone. The curves are sinuous looking and the finish is very smooth with just a very light oil to protect and bring out the grain. This Kat Eyz bridge transformed it from a beater to a valued one of a kind instrument. This bridge really changed the sound of the banjo. It means that it might just take trying several bridges before you find the one that makes the sound you want on your banjo. It's vertically laminated, which is a totally new fancy feature that was previously unknown to me (and may explain why it sounds so much better than any of the other bridges I've tried out).It is absolutely beautiful. It reminded me of espresso, bold dark, resonant, yet with clarity and the right "ghosts" (my term) up the neck. Cool looking design and just different than most. I also put on a new set of Aquila Classic Nylgut with the red 4th string. All I know is that suddenly I have to adjust to the idea that I've lost a beater banjo and now have 2 good sounding banjos. Not too dark, not too right. Rounding out the first incarnation of F and F was my Mustangs bandmate and close friend Scott King. I have been playing with Tim's Ambrosia Red Maple bridgefor a couple months now. I had been looking at banjos for a long time and decided to get a Recording King RK R20 to start with. One morning in January of 2010 Sammie and I were eating breakfast at the Chic-Fil-A when I saw the now sixteen-year-old Maggie hanging out with her friends. He even tweaked the string spacing for me, as the stock bridge had the strings a little too close together for me. It arrived a few days later so I put it on, tweaked the head a bit and left it overnight to settle. Tim is very accomplished, respectful manager and human being. This one went on my '81 Gold Star GF 100, which really didn't sound too bad, but with the new bridge it just has so much more clarity and improved quality of tone, it is hard to believe. I deliberated over this bridge only a couple of days, even though it's the most expensive bridge I've purchased. I sent Bart the order form from his website with a few questions -- his responses were quick and thorough, and a bridge was quickly on its way to me. It's is downright scary - its seems to get sounds out of the banjo that *should*, but usually *don't*, exist. (the Old Barn one is nice too for a woody sound). Increased overall volume. the 1st and 5th strings are spaced perfectly in the middle over the arch between the feet, while the 2nd-4th strings are noticeably (a couple thousandths) off center toward the 5th string. I love playing on that part of the neck on this banjo now. So I had to try out the new bridge on my old Stelling Whitestar. There is an immediate difference in the voice of the Banjo. I've used this and the Vintage Tone (same style different wood) for two years, and although I have other makes (Farquhar, Snuffy Smith) I always go back to the Emerson ones. This wood is recovered from old pianos and is the first one of Tim's bridges I've used in the shop, or on my personal banjos. The Red Maple mellowed it out just enough, increased the bass response, and greatly improved note separation.
