One of the feature races at Wolverhampton on Friday is the 0-85 fillies’ handicap over 7f at 3.10, in which CARNIVAL OF LIGHT should take the beating. Charlie Johnston’s 4yo only made her belated debut last month and didn’t show much in her first two starts on turf, but she really got it together when coming home 5l clear in a maiden over this course and distance a fortnight ago. That looked to be an ordinary race at the time, but the runner-up was only beaten a neck in a similar event to this at Southwell on Monday and there is every chance that she can step up again now switched to a handicap.

The 0-80 handicap over 6f at 4.55 can go to AMERICAN STYLE. Kevin Ryan’s gelding was making his AW debut when beaten a neck and a nose into third of ten over this course and distance 17 days ago. He has gone up 1lb for that, but still remains well treated on his best form while he drops to this level for the first time since his successful handicap debut at Ripon in April last year.

Over at Newcastle REGINALD CHARLES looks good for the first division of the 0-65 handicap over 7f at 4.30. Geoff Oldroyd’s gelding has gained all three wins over this trip on Tapeta, including one here. He is just 1lb higher than for the latest win at Southwell in December and his third of ten back there from 2lb higher in April (the last time he raced on the AW) was probably an even better performance, given the first, second, fourth and eighth horses all won their next starts.

The second division at 5.05 can go to FINN IRONSIDE. Ivan Furtado’s gelding is 2lb lower than when winning this race last year under regular rider Elle-May Croot and his last couple of efforts at Kempton and Southwell suggested he was ready to take advantage of this exploitable mark.
