The best handicap at either of Tuesday’s AW meetings is the 0-75 contest over 1m (8.15) at Newcastle, in which FLYING FLETCHER looks interesting. The Faheys’ gelding has performed no more than creditably in his last three starts on turf, but given his record of 0-13 on grass he should be condemned for that. However, one effect of those efforts is that his AW mark has dropped by the same amount as his turf mark, meaning he is just 1lb higher than when successful in a 0-80 contest over this course and distance in January and 3lb lower than when a close third of 12 in a 0-85 back here in March.

It looks worth taking a chance with BARLEYBROWN in the closing 0-55 handicap over the same trip at 8.45. No-one will claim that Ruth Carr’s gelding is the easiest and his current losing run is up to 17, but there is no denying that the four-time course-and-distance winner has dropped to a tempting mark, 7lb lower than when last successful and 6lb lower than when beaten less than 2l into third of nine in a 0-70 on his reappearance here in March. He hasn’t enjoyed the best of luck in his three outings since then, but if things do pan out his way he is more than capable of winning this.

The best bet over at Wolverhampton looks to be BUNGLE BAY in the second division of the 0-50 classified event over 7f at 6.30. One of just two in the race with an official rating bang on the race ceiling, James Evans’ gelding has gained all eight career wins at this track, five of them over this trip. He looked to be on the way back when second of eight in a 0-55 handicap here six weeks ago and is 1-1 at this level.

SILKIES SIB can take the closing 0-60 handicap over the extended 1m1f at 9.00. James Owen’s gelding also looked to be on the way back when placed in a slightly better handicap than this here 15 days ago, taking his record over course and distance to 1233. Not only that, another 1lb drop in the meantime puts him back on the same mark as when successful at Chelmsford in February. David Bellingham
